Created for the 2014 Whitney Biennial, Aviarium is a set of five sculptures devised as a sound-based installation that is entirely silent. The sculptures employ aluminium rods and stacked cymbals of varying sizes to replicate the wave vectors of birdsong in three dimensions, creating sculptural representations of the sonic patterns of different bird species. The works render sonic experiences visual, capturing their range and diversity. Jutting into the gallery space and hovering overhead, Aviarium answers the artist’s call to ‘find a way to make music as physical as sculpture might be, and sculpture as ethereal as music is.’
