Amie Siegel's Asterisms (2021) will be shown at LUMA Arles, 16 December 2022 - 5 March 2023, as part of Though it's dark, still I sing: Works from the 34th Bienal de São Paulo. This will mark the work’s first exhibition in Europe, having debuted in São Paulo in September 2021.
Asterisms explores geological and social displacement on a planetary scale, focusing on the specific context of the United Arab Emirates. Gold factories, oil recovery, migrant labour, desertification, artificial islands and Arabian horses trained for show are among the connected elements that unfold in different, often overlapping, cinematic geometries projected onto a star-like shape that floats between a wall and a sculpture. The various superimposed projection formats suggest a stylized star, or asterism – an informal group of stars and the lines used to mentally connect them, whose form we can identify in the night sky, if we look hard enough.
