Barbara Kasten announced as a 2023 Anonymous Was A Woman winner.
Kasten was born in 1936 in Chicago IL, where she currently lives and works. Trained as a painter and sculptor, she developed an approach to abstract photography that remains completely autonomous to this day, with a body of work that includes photographs, sculptures, expansive objects, and complex multimedia installations. Kasten’s work has been exhibited widely across the US and Europe and her most recent exhibition at Thomas Dane Gallery in London was Present Continuous in 2022. In 2024 Kasten will present a solo exhibition at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea.
Anonymous Was A Woman is a grant-making nonprofit that has awarded over $7 million to women-identifying artists since 1996. This year, 15 artists - ranging in age from 42 to 87 - will receive an unrestricted prize of $25,000 each.
