4.7.24 - Catherine Opie at Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand Catherine Opie: Genre/Gender/Portraiture opens at Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) tomorrow, Friday 5 July 2024.

Opie’s first solo institutional exhibition in Brazil will feature 66 photographs from her most emblematic series, developed over more than three decades. The artist's portraits will be presented alongside 21 important paintings from MASP’s collection, including works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Hans Holbein, Anthony van Dyck and Van Gogh.

Working in dialogue with the tradition of Western portraiture painting, Opie’s work has been at the forefront of the exploration of gender diversity and representation of queer identities since the late 1980s. Presenting her portraits alongside historical works serves to emphasise the dialogues, tensions and reformulations that Opie’s work proposes, as well as highlighting her predilection for figurative art—a hallmark of MASP's collection.

Curated by Adriano Pedrosa, Artistic Director, MASP, and Guilherme Giufrida, Assistant Curator, MASP.

A catalogue to accompany the exhibition will be published in both Portuguese and English, edited by Adriano Pedrosa and Guilherme Giufrida, with contributions by Ashton Cooper, David Joselit, Guilherme Giufrida, Jack Halberstam and Vi Grunvald.
