Steve McQueen will join Paul Gilroy in conversation at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York, co-presented with Dia Art Foundation, this Friday, 4 April 2025, at 7pm.
Paul Gilroy is one of the foremost theorists of race and racism working and teaching in the world today and is the author of influential publications including The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness (1993). He has written extensively on and in response to Steve McQueen’s work, most recently for the catalogue that accompanies the immersive light-and-sound installation Bass (2024), currently on view at Dia Beacon. For this conversation they will focus on their shared interest in music, taking the complex musical idioms associated with the work as a starting point.
