Artist Phillip King’s retrospective at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 1992 showcased the fresh strand of ceramics for which he is celebrated, with the hardy elegance that it exudes through its use of industrial materials such as fibreglass, metal, plastic, resin, wood and steel alongside traditional ones. Having never been displayed outdoors before, King’s work gained a new gravity in YSP’s bracing eighteenth century landscape. This book dovetails a perceptive commentary by Richard Cork with both mono and colour photographs of pieces, both within and outside their contexts in the exhibition, which accentuate the breadth and nuance of King’s creative vision.
