This catalogue accompanies the first solo exhibition in the UK of work by Arturo Herrera, comprising collage, painting, projected animation and wall drawing. As well as being an intense aesthetic experience, the presentation reflects a distinct seriousness, incorporating an awareness of Modernist traditions that both inform and contextualise Herrera’s practice. His clear references to the work of other artists, conflated with motifs derived from American popular culture, suggest a wealth of meaning – propositions which are examined in depth through a series of insightful essays by Dave Hickey, Juan Ledezma and Elizabeth Fisher – encouraging a philosophical scepticism with respect to the institution of art.
